Members of the public are encouraged to conserve energy in their daily lives to help make Hong Kong a low-carbon city, the Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Mr Stephen Chan, said today (November 13).
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the E&M Safety Carnival 2010, Mr Chan called on the public to arrange regular maintenance and inspection of electrical and mechanical installations at their homes, and to adopt a green lifestyle to conserve energy.
Jointly organised by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) and 15 organisations from relevant sectors and trades, the E&M Safety Carnival 2010 is the highlight of the E&M Safety Campaign 2010. The Campaign, organised annually by EMSD since 2001, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. It has become one of the largest public education events in Hong Kong.
The E&M Safety Carnival 2010 will be held at Sha Tsui Road Playground in Tsuen Wan today and tomorrow (November 13 and 14).
In a bid to disseminate the message on energy conservation and electrical and mechanical safety to residents of various districts, Mr Chan said that Tsuen Wan was chosen to host the carnival for the first time this year. He thanked the 15 organisations for their support for this year's campaign and also for their promotion of electrical and mechanical safety and energy efficiency.
Also officiating at the ceremony today was the Permanent Secretary for the Environment, Ms Anissa Wong.
The E&M Safety Campaign 2010 aims to enhance the community's awareness of energy conservation and safety issues in the use of electrical appliances and installations, gas appliances, lifts and escalators, amusement rides and railways. Various activities, such as online quizzes, drawing, poster and photo story competitions are organised to instill energy conservation and safety awareness and foster good practice at a young age. EMSD is responsible for the enforcement of laws and regulations with regard to electrical, mechanical, gas and railway safety and energy efficiency in Hong Kong, as well as promoting energy efficiency and the wider use of renewable energy. The Department is also actively involved in public education through its work with the media and other publicity channels, such as visits to schools and elderly centres. EMSD takes the initiative to reach out to different sectors of the community in order to help promote the right practice in E&M safety and energy conservation.
