Local vegetable farmers on a study tour to South Africa (with photos)
********************************************************

A delegation of local farmers will leave for South Africa on November 9 on an eleven-day visit to learn more about vegetable production and marketing technology systems, and to exchange experience with their counterparts.

The 19-member delegation comprises organic farmers and representatives from vegetable marketing co-operative societies, the Vegetable Marketing Organization and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. They will visit organic and conventional farms, and research and marketing facilities in the vicinity of Cape Town.

The Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation, Mr Alan Wong, today (November 5) presented a pennant to the representatives of the delegation as well as the South African Consulate-General for their assistance in arranging the visit.

Blessed with abundant natural resources and an excellent climate, the agricultural industry in South Africa is diversified and well developed.  The study visit provides a good opportunity for delegation members to gain knowledge and understanding of crop farming in South Africa. They can also apply what they learn to help promote the development of the local vegetable production and marketing industry.

Locally produced vegetables are popular among consumers for their freshness and quality.  There are about 760 hectares of farm land in Hong Kong, supplying some 45 tonnes of vegetables daily.
