The Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra (HKYSO), which is trained by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, recently completed a nine-day Ambassador Visit to Expo 2010 Shanghai China (Shanghai Expo).
While in Shanghai they delighted visitors from all over the world with their rich orchestral repertoire, as well as participating in various exchange programmes with Shanghai's young musicians. Now back in Hong Kong, the HKYSO will share their musical journey with local audiences at the "Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra Annual Concert after Ambassador Visit to Shanghai Expo 2010", to be held at 8pm on November 12 (Friday) at the Tsuen Wan Town Hall auditorium.
Under the baton of conductors Mr Ng Ka-ming, Dr Joseph Kam and Mr Simon Li, the HKYSO will play the popular compositions that they performed during Hong Kong Week at Shanghai Expo. These include the rhythmical and energetic "Overture to Candide" by Bernstein (USA), and "Three Dances" from "The Bartered Bride", which depicts a dynamic, colourful and Bohemian rural life, by Smetana (Czech Republic).
The HKYSO will also perform "Concerto for Two Bassoons and Orchestra in F major" by Vanhal, and selections from the "Firebird Suite" by Stravinsky. The Hong Kong Junior Chamber Ensemble will also guest-perform at this memorable event. They will present "Serenade in D major'Serenata Notturna'", by Mozart and "Concerto Grosso in G major, Op.6 No.1" by Handel.
Since its establishment in 1978, the HKYSO has provided advanced-level orchestral training for young musicians, and many orchestra members have gone on to become eminent professionals. The orchestra has collaborated with many conductors and soloists of international acclaim. Last May, they were invited by UNICEF to perform a joint concert with world-class pianist Lang Lang.
The orchestra has also participated in concert tours to France, Israel, Cyprus, the United Kingdom, Australia, Mainland China, the United States and Singapore. These tours not only facilitate international cultural exchange, but also elevate the local musical standard and broaden the vision of our young musicians.
Tickets at $80, $60 and $40 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessionary tickets are available for full-time students, senior citizens, people with disabilities and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
