Eight Hong Kong students achieved excellent results at the 10th China Western Mathematical Olympiad 2010 (CWMO2010), winning one gold, four silver and three bronze medals.
Organised by the China Mathematical Olympiad Organising Committee and the CWMO2010 Organising Committee, the competition was held from October 26 to 31, 2010, in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province. A total of 104 mathematically talented secondary students from 24 teams took part in the competition.
The competition was aimed at promoting mathematics education in Western China, enhancing the students' interest in learning mathematics, and identifying talented young mathematicians. It also steps up the interflow of mathematics education among the western provinces as well as with other regions.
The Hong Kong team members also participated in various activities and visits in the vicinity of Taiyuan, Shanxi. Taking the chance to familiarise themselves with the motherland, they also strengthened their sense of national identity, communication and inter-personal skills.
All of the Hong Kong team members received training provided by the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE), and they were selected to represent Hong Kong after receiving training in the mathematics enrichment programme. The Education Bureau (EDB) fully sponsored the Hong Kong team's participation in the event. The HKAGE will continue to hold a variety of challenging programmes for gifted students, while the EDB will continue to provide sponsorship Hong Kong to join cross-border mathematical competitions.
Mr Leung Chit-wan, Vice-chairman of The International Mathematical Olympiad Hong Kong Committee served as team leader, while Ms Wei Mi-yine, Curriculum Development Officer of Mathematics Education Section, EDB was deputy leader of the HK Team.
