Dubbed "one of the most influential saxophonists for the past 20 years", six-time Grammy award-winner David Sanborn will visit Hong Kong for a concert next month (November).
Renowned and revered the world over as one of the greatest saxophone players of all time, David Sanborn is an artist whose music has inspired countless musicians while creating a body of work that spans the genres of rock and roll, R&B, pop and jazz.
Sanborn's first contact with his musical instrument came about in an unexpected fashion. He contracted polio when he was only three, and as part of his rehabilitative therapy he was introduced to the saxophone. It was an introduction with consequences quite beyond the imagination of his parents, doctors - or anyone else.
Even before he finished high school, Sanborn had played with names such as Albert King and Little Milton, and he soon joined the Butterfield Blues Band. Leaving the band brought Sanborn the opportunity to tour with Stevie Wonder. He then rocked briefly with rock and roll heroes The Rolling Stones and toured with David Bowie.
In 1975 Sanborn released his first solo album, "Taking Off". The record enjoyed respectable sales and he continued flexing his considerable musical muscles as a solo artist, scoring massive popular hits with 1980's "Hideaway" and 1981's Grammy-winning "Voyeur". It was in 1983 that Sanborn released his landmark "Backstreet" album, which proved a major hit in the world of contemporary jazz. He was awarded his second Grammy in 1986 for the album "Double Vision". The albums "Pearls", "Songs From The Night Before" and "Essentials" reflect the essence of an artist at peace with his own sound and development, yet still hungry - eager to explore the possibilities of his instrument and his own ability.
"Jazz Up: David Sanborn" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The concert will be at 8pm, Monday, November 29, at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Tickets priced at $150, $220, $300 and $420 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients may have 50% off (limited quotas for students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis).
