The Qing court awarded official titles to the directors of Tung Wah in recognition of their fundraising efforts for natural disasters in Mainland China. The directors were thus allowed to receive Mainland government officials visiting Hong Kong dressed in guanfu (official robes). This photograph, taken around 1885 in the assembly hall of the Tung Wah Hospital, shows Tung Wah directors wearing Qing official robes and headgear.
