Four distinguished young musicians from Hong Kong and Taiwan will give a concert of Chopin's chamber music in November.
Chopin is known as a composer for piano. Nevertheless, he found odd occasions to turn to other forms of composition, like chamber music. In this concert, Gilbert Sak (violin), Chang Pei-chieh (cello), Sophia Yang (piano) and Ken So (piano) will perform "Introduction and Polonaise Brillante in C for Cello and Piano", "Cello Sonata in G minor", "Rondo in C for Two Pianos", "Grand Duo Concertant in E for Cello and Piano" and "Piano Trio in G minor".
The first Hong Kong native to receive a doctorate in violin performance, Gilbert Sak studied in Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. He has held principal positions in a number of orchestras in the United States, and currently is the principal second violin of the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong. Sak teaches violin and viola, string pedagogy and chamber music at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Hong Kong Baptist University and the Hong Kong Institute of Education.
Born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Chang Pei-chieh obtained her master's degree at the New England Conservatory of Music. Chang is a founding member of Cello4, the first and award-winning quartet in Taiwan. She has represented Taiwan to perform at New York's Lincoln Center and attended the Tanglewood Festival under a full scholarship where she performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Chang is currently principal cello of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta.
Sophia Yang received her first piano lesson when she was six. The Taiwan-born pianist holds master's and doctoral degrees majoring in piano performance from New York Manhattan School of Music and the City University of New York. She is currently on the piano faculty at the Hong Kong Baptist University.
Born and bred in Hong Kong, Ken So began his piano training at the age of five. He entered the Music and Fine Arts Department of the Hong Kong Baptist University and graduated in 2004. Later, he entered the Professional Diploma Course and the Master of Music in Performance programme of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts under the tutelage of Raymond Young. In 2007, he received the LRSM piano performance diploma from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.
"Chopin's Chamber Music" is one of the programmes of Our Music Talents series presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be held at 8pm, November 30 (Tuesday), at the Theatre of Hong Kong City Hall. Tickets priced at $100 and $150 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients may have 50% off. (Limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis.) A maximum discount of 15% is offered for the Our Music Talents series package.
