A major exhibition showcasing works of contemporary, cross-disciplinary art by a select group of Hong Kong visual and performing artists opened today (October 14) at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Shanghai.
The "Legacy and Creations - Art vs Art" exhibition, runs until November 12, is one of Hong Kong's cultural programmes for Expo 2010 Shanghai China (Shanghai Expo). It is also a highlight of the Hong Kong Cultural Week of the 12th China Shanghai International Arts Festival.
At today's opening ceremony, the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services of the HKSAR, Mrs Betty Fung, said: "This exhibition showcases the works of 19 representative figures in Hong Kong's world of art, design, architecture, electronics, literature, music and dance. Drawing on their respective fields of expertise and integrating different art forms with other disciplines, these artists create unique works with local identities, yet crossing the boundary of traditional art."
Since the exhibition coincides with the annual general meeting of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), participants from different parts of the world will be invited to view the "Legacy and Creations - Art vs Art" exhibition.
Mrs Fung continued, "We hope that the exhibition will enable artists and museum professionals of different regions to gain a better understanding of Hong Kong's art and culture, as well as facilitate communication between museum professionals."
Also officiating at today's ceremony were Mr Liu Jian, Deputy Director-General of Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film and TV; Mr Ye Sheng, Chief of Cultural Bureau of Shanghai Huangpu District; Mr Samuel Kung, Director and Curator of MOCA, Shanghai; Director of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Affairs, Shanghai, Mr Patrick Chan; and Chief Curator of Hong Kong Museum of Art, Mr Tang Hoi-chiu.
The 16 works on display at the exhibition demonstrate the identity and diversity of Hong Kong's contemporary art, reflecting the special characteristics of Hong Kong as well as embracing the Chinese and the world's arts and culture.
Local visual artists taking part in the exhibition include Lam Tung-pang, Hung Keung, Lee Chihoi, Kong Khong-chang, Chow Chun-fai, Wilson Shieh, Almond Chu, Stanley Wong, Kacey Wong, Sara Tse, Pak Sheung-chuen, Kingsley Ng, Tim Li, Rocco Yim, Teddy Lo, and Freeman Lau. At the opening ceremony, Kung Chi-shing, Leung Ping-kwan and Mui Cheuk-yin displayed their talent in a mixed performance combining text, dance and music.
The exhibition is jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and the MOCA, Shanghai, and organised by the Hong Kong Museum of Art, and sponsored by Sino Group.
The exhibition comes after the one that took place in July 2010 entitled "Legacy and Creations - Ink Art vs Ink Art", jointly organised by LCSD and Shanghai Art Museum (also for Shanghai Expo), which received an overwhelming response.
The MOCA, Shanghai, located at 231 Nanjing Road (West), Shanghai, is open from 10am to 6pm.
The standard admission is RMB20. Admission is RMB10 for students, senior citizens aged 70 or above, disabled people and other specified groups.
