The Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Miss Janet Wong, representing the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on science and technology co-operation with the Deputy Premier and Minister of Advanced Education and Technology, Government of the Province of Alberta, Canada, Mr Doug Horner, in Hong Kong today (October 14).

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Miss Wong said the MOU would promote collaboration for joint research and commercialisation that would contribute to the development of science and technology in Hong Kong and Alberta.  The Alberta Provincial Government has set up an office in the Hong Kong Science Park to encourage Albertan R&D companies to establish a presence there to take advantage of the Pearl River Delta as both a market and a manufacturing centre.

Under the MOU, both sides agree to identify priority areas of technological co-operation and explore co-operative activities in exchanges of personnel, especially scientists and students; joint research and development projects; conferences and seminars to facilitate further exchanges; and exchange of science and technology information and documentation.

The MOU will be effective for five years. The two governments will explore the feasibility of establishing a joint working group to plan and co-ordinate activities on scientific and technological co-operation.
