Keep venues clean during National Day Fireworks Display
*******************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) today (September 29) appealed to people to keep places clean and tidy while enjoying the National Day Fireworks Display on Friday (October 1) and to take away their belongings and not leave behind any rubbish.

An LCSD spokesman reminded the public that litterers were liable to a fixed penalty of $1,500.

Staff from the LCSD and law enforcement teams of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department and the Police will step up patrols at venues including the Piazza of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, Urban Council Centenary Garden, Avenue of Stars, Middle Road Children's Playground, Tsim Sha Tsui East Waterfront Podium Garden and West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade where large crowds are expected. Enforcement action will be taken against littering, illegal hawking and vandalism of public property.

Banners will be displayed and announcements broadcast on-site to remind the public to pay attention to safety and to keep places clean.

Additional departmental staff, security guards and cleaning staff will also be deployed to the venues.

As part of the community support, youth volunteers will help spread the message of keeping venues clean at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. They will also assist in the clean-up operation at the venue immediately after the fireworks.

The spokesman also reminded the public who intended to go to the Tsim Sha Tsui Waterfront areas to take special care of their safety in crowded places.

To facilitate the fireworks display, the elevated walkway and the High Block of Hong Kong City Hall will be partially closed from 6pm. The High Block will be open to hirers and participants of events held at the Recital Hall and Exhibition Gallery only during the period. The Low Block will be open to the public as usual.

Signal Hill Garden will be temporarily closed from 5pm that day.
