Update on cluster of Respiratory Syncytial Virus infection cases in Tuen Mun Hospital male mentally handicapped ward

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding an earlier announcement on a male mentally handicapped ward in Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) in which some patients had presented with upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) symptoms, the hospital spokesperson gave the following update today (September 22):

     One more patient (aged 17) has presented with URTI symptoms. The patient is being treated under isolation and in stable condition.  Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patient and preliminary test results were negative for Respiratory Syncytial Virus.  Up to now, six patients have presented with URTI symptoms.   

     Admission to the ward has been suspended. Restricted visits to and discharge from the ward have been imposed. Infection control measures have been stepped up. Other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

     The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.
