Locally based Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra will join rising violinist Janice Lui to perform in "Music Around the World" concerts next month.
Under the baton of the orchestra's music director Dr Yip Wai-hong and guest conductor Ho Chi-chung, Lui will join the orchestra to play Kabalevsky's "Violin Concerto in C". The orchestra will also play Mozart's overture to "The Marriage of Figaro", Beethoven's overture to "Coriolan", Dvorak's "Legendy (Legends) No. 7 in A", Rossini's overture to "L'Italiana in Algeri", Barber's "Adagio for Strings", Honegger's "Pastorale d'ete", Bartok's "Romanian Folk Dances" and Yip Wai-hong's "Prelude and Fugue in Chinese Style".
A native of Hong Kong, Ho Chi-Chung earned his reputation when he was pursuing his graduate degrees in the United States. He was appointed the music director of the Mason Symphony Orchestra, the University of Michigan Gilbert and Sullivan Society (opera), the Theatre of Michigan States University (musical), among other conducting positions. He has collaborated with the Baltimore Symphony, the Baltimore Opera, the Peabody Conservatory Opera, and the Christian Oratorio Society.
Ho has been invited to conduct in Asia and Eastern Europe. In addition to his work as a conductor, he also devotes himself to music education, composition, and instrumental performance.
Born in 1997, Janice Lui started violin lessons at the age of six and has obtained the Violin Associate Diploma (ATCL) of Trinity College, London, and the Diploma in Violin Performance (Dip. ABRSM) of the Royal School of Music with distinctions. She was the winner of the violin solo in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival consecutively from 2004 to 2009.
The Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra is a highly organised orchestra that aims to promote music among the public, especially the younger generation, in Hong Kong. The orchestra has performed frequently with internationally famous conductors and soloists in Hong Kong over the past 30 years. By using the idiom of popular music and organising concert talks, the orchestra has successfully introduced serious music and Chinese orchestral music to the public, and at the same time, raised popular awareness of indigenous culture.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Music Around the World" concerts will be at 8pm, October 16 (Saturday), at the Theatre, Sheung Wan Civic Centre; at 3pm, October 17 (Sunday), at the Theatre, Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre, and at 8pm, October 23 (Saturday), at the Y-Theatre, Youth Square, Chai Wan. Tickets priced at $100 and $120 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients may have 50% off (limited quotas for CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis).
