********************************************************

Hongkong Post today (September 6) announced that a definitive stamp sheetlet to congratulate Professor Charles K. Kao on his award of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics will be released for sale together with philatelic products on September 21.

Professor Kao, known as the "father of fibre optics", was awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for his groundbreaking research on data transmission by light through fibres. To honour this celebrated scientist with a close personal connection to Hong Kong, a stamp sheetlet will be issued on September 21, which also coincides with World Alzheimer's Day.

Given the significant influence that fibre optics has on software applications that pave the way for the efficient flow of information and communication through the Internet, Hongkong Post has produced a souvenir booklet recording the bold vision, strenuous efforts and unwavering determination displayed by Professor Kao throughout the years.  A sample of optical fibre is attached inside to enhance the booklet's educational value.

Part of the proceeds from this souvenir booklet will be donated to the Charles K. Kao Foundation for Alzheimer's Disease Limited, a registered non-profit-making charity established to raise public awareness of senile dementia and to promote better support for relatives as well as care-givers of patients suffering from Alzheimer's Disease.

Official souvenir covers at $1 each will be offered for sale at all post offices from tomorrow (September 7).  For those interested in a preview, the stamp sheetlet and philatelic products will be displayed at the General Post Office, Tsim Sha Tsui Post Office, Tsuen Wan Post Office and Shatin Central Post Office on the same day.  Advance orders for servicing self-provided covers will be accepted at all philatelic offices from September 7 to 13.

Information about this definitive stamp sheetlet and related philatelic products can be obtained from the website of Hongkong Post at www.hongkongpost.com.
