Nine employers ordered to pay MPF contributions

The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:

     The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (September 3) obtained an order for payment of outstanding MPF contributions of about $211,000 against an employer in the District Court.

     The District Court today granted a judgement against the employer, Tat Shing (Hong Kong) Clothing Limited, which was ordered to pay the MPFA $211,619.16, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable to 29 employees.

     Meanwhile, the MPFA pursued eight claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $119,000 on behalf of 29 employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.

     At the Tribunal's hearing today, the eight defendants, namely Tastecreator Brand Management Limited, Kay Drycleaning & Laundry Company Limited, Freeman Concepts Limited, Grand Shine (H.K.) Limited trading as Tequila Mexican Restaurant & Bar, Real King Technology Limited, Au Chi Yuen, Cheung Fat Stationery Limited and Triple Champion Enterprises Limited trading as Taipei 101, did not appear. In their absence, the Adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA $28,482.61, $23,465.51, $16,887.11, $10,641.75, $6,912, $6,720, $3,150 and $663.82 respectively, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.

     The Adjudicator also ordered the defendant Au Chi Yuen to pay the MPFA the financial penalty of $5,000 which was imposed by the MPFA for failure to make MPF contributions for an employee.

     The amounts awarded at the District Court and the Tribunal will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The District Court ordered the defendant to pay the costs of $930. The Tribunal ordered the eight defendants to pay $100, $129, $175, $50, $76, $159, $96 and $89 respectively as the costs in respect of the claims.
