The Secretary for Justice, Mr Wong Yan Lung, SC, visited Sha Tin District this afternoon (September 3) to see its welfare and sports training facilities, in addition to meeting community leaders.
Accompanied by Sha Tin District Officer, Mrs Do Pang Wai-yee, Mr Wong first called on the Spastics Association of Hong Kong Jockey Club New Page Inn (the Inn) in Ma On Shan. This is the first of its kind for tetraplegic clients in Hong Kong, providing both transitional residential service and day-time training.
Mr Wong was impressed by the Inn's wide range of rehabilitation facilities for tetraplegic patients and support for their family members. These are conducive to the reintegration of such persons into the community.
This was followed by a visit to the Hong Kong Sports Institute, where elite athletes are intensively trained. Mr Wong was briefed on the redevelopment programme carried out at the institute after the Equestrian Games. He was told that the addition of more modern facilities would enhance the institute's training of Hong Kong's sports talent.
The third leg of Mr Wong's visit was to the Sweet Heart Cafe, a social enterprise sponsored by the Home Affairs Department. The cafe provides employment training opportunities for youngsters.
At the cafe, Mr Wong also met Sha Tin community leaders to exchange views and share experiences on a wide range of community issues.
