CHP investigates influenza A outbreak in elderly home
*****************************************************

     The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (September 2) urged people and management of institutions to take preventive measures against influenza by strictly observing environmental and personal hygiene.

     The appeal followed the CHP's investigation into a report of a confirmed influenza A outbreak in an elderly home in Sha Tin, affecting 21 residents.

     Twelve men and nine women, aged from 74 to 96, have developed fever, cough and sore throat since August 23.

     Sixteen of them are still in hospital. All the affected are in stable condition.

     Nasopharyngeal specimens taken from 19 affected residents tested positive for influenza A.

     CHP staff have visited the elderly home and provided health advice to staff. The institution is under medical surveillance.

     The spokesman reminded members of the public to take the following measures to prevent influenza and other respiratory illnesses:

*    Build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking;
*    Maintain good personal and environmental hygiene;
*    Wash hands after sneezing, coughing or cleaning the nose;
*    Maintain good ventilation; and
*    Avoid visiting crowded places with poor ventilation.
