Update on cluster of Human Metapneumovirus cases in Tai Po Hospital male psychiatric ward

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding some cases of Human Metapneumovirus in a male psychiatric ward of Tai Po Hospital, the hospital spokesperson issued the following updates today (August 30):

     One more male patient (aged 54) in the concerned ward had presented with upper respiratory symptoms.  The patient has been treated under isolation and is in stable condition.

     In addition, four patients (aged from 22 to 39) and five staff members in another male psychiatric ward had presented with upper respiratory symptoms since August 23.  Appropriate tests had been arranged for the patients and the test results are pending.  The patients are treated under isolation and are in stable condition.  Three staff members have resumed duties while the remaining two are on sick leave.

     Admission and visiting to the wards concerned have been suspended and infection control measures of the ward have already been stepped up. All other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
