World-class cellist Mischa Maisky will return to Hong Kong and give a performance with his pianist daughter Lily in October.
Maisky will perform Beethoven's "Seven Variations on Mozart's 'The Magic Flute'", Schumann's "Fantasiestucke", Rachmaninov's "Vocalise" and "Elegie in E minor", De Falla's "Suite Populaire Espagnole", Debussy's "Cello Sonata in D minor", and Chopin's "Waltz in A minor", "Nocturne in E minor" and "Etude in C-sharp minor" in the concert.
Born in Latvia and educated in Russia, Mischa Maisky has the distinction of being the only cellist in the world to have studied with both Mstislav Rostropovich and Gregor Piatigorsky.
In the past 25 years, Maisky has made more than 30 recordings with such orchestras as the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra of Europe. His recordings have enjoyed worldwide critical acclaim and have been awarded the prestigious Record Academy Prize in Tokyo five times, the Echo Deutscher Schallplattenpreis three times, the Grand Prix du Disque in Paris and Diapason d'Or of the Year as well as Grammy nominations.
A regular guest at most major international festivals, Maisky has collaborated with such conductors as Leonard Bernstein, Charles Dutoit, Carlo Maria Giulini, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, James Levine, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Giuseppe Sinopoli and Daniel Barenboim. His partnerships have included such artists as Martha Argerich, Radu Lupu, Nelson Freire, Evgeny Kissin, Lang Lang, Peter Serkin, Gidon Kremer, Yuri Bashmet, Vadim Repin, Maxim Vengerov, Joshua Bell, Julian Rachlin and Janine Jansen, to name just a few.
One of the programmes in the "Encore series" presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Cello Recital by Mischa Maisky" will be staged at 8pm, October 3, at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Tickets priced at $160, $280, $400 and $520 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients may have 50% off (limited quotas for CSSA recipients on a first-come-first-served basis). A discount of 10% is offered for each purchase of standard tickets for both "Cello Recital by Mischa Maisky" and "Flute Recital by Sir James Galway".
