A two-week candidate nomination phase for the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) nomination exercise will start tomorrow (August 3). The Home Affairs Bureau (HAB) encourages arts professionals who wish to participate directly in the development of the arts in Hong Kong to submit their candidate application forms as soon as possible.
The HKADC was established to promote the development of the arts in Hong Kong. The term of office of its current members will expire on December 31, 2010. The HAB is conducting an exercise to nominate representatives of 10 arts interests for the next term of the HKADC beginning January 1, 2011.
The voter registration in the nomination exercise was completed on July 19, and recorded 7,071 registered eligible voters. A spokesperson for the HAB said, "We hope that the local arts community will continue to take an active role in the subsequent phases of the exercise. Candidate nomination for the exercise will start tomorrow and we urge interested arts professionals to stand for nomination and strive for the opportunity to participate in the work of the HKADC."
The two-week candidate nomination period will run from August 3 to 16. To stand for nomination, a prospective candidate has to be a registered voter of the particular arts interest for which he/she is standing as a candidate, and nominated by at least five proposers, or 1% of the number of registered voters from the same arts interest (whichever is higher). A proposer must be a registered voter of the same arts interest as the prospective candidate and may nominate only one candidate in this nomination exercise. Based on the registered voter roll, the number of proposers required for each of the 10 arts interests is as follows:
Arts interest Number of proposers required
1. Arts Administration 5
2. Arts Criticism 5
3. Arts Education 6
4. Dance 16
5. Drama 5
6. Film Arts 5
7. Literary Arts 5
8. Music 8
9. Visual Arts 12
10. Chinese Opera (Xiqu) 12
There will be a four-week electioneering period for the candidates after the close of the candidate nomination phase. During this period, a candidate forum will be organised by the nomination agent for candidates to present their platforms and address their voters. The polling is scheduled for September 17 to 19.
Registered eligible voters will receive from the nomination agent the voter notification letters and candidate application forms this week. Those who fail to receive these materials by the end of this week may contact the nomination agent, PR Concepts Asia Ltd, at 2232 3981 or by email to info@voteforhkadc2010.hk. Registered voters can also download the relevant guidelines and forms from the official website, www.voteforhkadc2010.hk.
