LWB commends outstanding building maintenance and decoration trainees for upgrading skills

     The Labour and Welfare Bureau (LWB) commended a group of outstanding trainees in the Building Maintenance and Decoration Industry at the "2010 Skills Upgrading Scheme (SUS) Lo Pan Award" presentation ceremony today (July 24) at Lo Pan Temple.

     Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Convenor of the Scheme's Building Maintenance and Decoration Industry Working Group, Mr Choi Chun-wa, said, "The Lo Pan Award aims to encourage and commend those building maintenance and decoration workers who strive to upgrade their work skills through lifelong learning.

     "This objective matches perfectly with the 'Lo Pan spirit' which emphasises innovation and continuous improvement.  Therefore, the annual SUS Award is held on Lo Pan Patron's Day to publicise the 'Lo Pan spirit'.

     "Since the introduction of the Building Maintenance and Decoration Industry of SUS seven years ago, some 5,500 workers have attended training classes.  The scheme has helped uplift the industry's work safety and skills standard and has encouraged elementary workers to pursue continuous learning," he said.

     The Secretary for Development, Mrs Carrie Lam, said at the ceremony, "I am confident the awardees will set an exemplary model for fellow workers in the construction industry in pursuing continuous skills upgrading and promoting construction site safety, contributing to Hong Kong's economic development."

     Another officiating guest, the Honorary Chairman of Kwong Yuet Tong Hong Kong, Mr Ho Sai-chu, said that to ensure sustainable development of Hong Kong's construction and maintenance industry, it was essential to improve the quality of the frontline staff.

     "SUS provides professional skills training for these frontline workers, raises their occupational safety awareness and enhances their work competitiveness," he added.

     Other officiating guests included the Director of Buildings, Mr Au Choi-kai; the Chairman of the Construction Industry Council, Mr Lee Shing-see; the Acting Deputy Commissioner for Labour, Mr Tso Sing-hin; the Chairman of the Occupational Safety and Health Council, Mr Lee Kai-ming; the Chairman of the Construction Workers Registration Authority, Dr Joseph Chow Ming-kuen; the Director (Training) of the Construction Industry Council, Mr Charles Wong Doon-yee; the Vice-president of Hong Kong Construction Association, Mr Thomas Ho On-sing; the President of Hong Kong General Building Contractors Association, Mr Ho Wai-wah; the Chairman of the Hong Kong Construction Sub-Contractors Association, Mr Lawrence Ng; the Chairman of the Hong Kong Construction Industry Employees' General Union, Mr Chow Luen-kiu; the Chairman of Kwong Yuet Tong Hong Kong, Mr Gilbert Lau Tai-wah; Principal Assistant Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Edward Mak Chun-yu; and Senior Liaison Officer of Central and Western District Office, Mr Tong Wing-po.

     The Skills Upgrading Scheme, introduced in 2001, provides professional and specific skills training for in-service workers with the aim of enhancing their employability and competitiveness in the labour market as well as promoting the culture of continuing education and lifelong learning in the community.
