In its new production "Sangre Flamenca", Nuevo Ballet Espanol will present in Hong Kong this September a passionate panorama of flamenco rhythms incorporating modern and traditional artistry.
The performance showcases the versatility of the 11 young dancers - five women and six men - who excel in flamenco, classical Spanish and contemporary dance. Costumes designed for each dance complement the spectacular staging.
The show's choreographers, Angel Rojas and Carlos Rodríguez, who founded Nuevo Ballet Espanol in 1995, are in the vanguard of modern Spanish dance. They shared the Best Dancer Award at the Spanish Annual Dance and Flamenco Choreography Awards in 1994. They became the choreographers and principal dancers of the company. Over the years, they have participated in many international festivals and their choreographic creations are now performed by other companies. In 2000, they were named Outstanding Dancers and Best Spanish Dance Company at the Jerez DDOO awards. They were awarded the Villa Prize Pilar López for Best Dance Performer 2005. Their other productions like "El Alma"(2006), "Bailando entre Palabras" (Dancing between Words)(2007) among many others have received international recognition.
Works by Nuevo Ballet Espanol include "Cambio de Tercio", "Tierra", Romeo Y Julieta", and "Fury". The company received the First Prize UP for Best Flamenco and Spanish Dance Company in 1999 and the Villa de Madrid Prize for Best Dance Interpreters in 2005. The company has toured Spain and the world, including Holland, France, Hong Kong, Belgium, Venezuela, the United States, the Philippines, Finland, Japan and Portugal.
