A high-powered ink art seminar was held this afternoon (July 17) at the Shanghai Art Museum to promote creative exchange between Hong Kong and Shanghai.
The seminar ties in with the "Legacy and Creations – Ink Art vs Ink Art" exhibition which opened at the Shanghai Art Museum yesterday as a major HKSAR programme for Expo 2010 Shanghai China (Shanghai Expo).
More than 30 Hong Kong scholars, artists participating in the exhibition, art critics and artists from Shanghai discussed a wide range of topics related to ink art, cultural exchange and arts education.
The seminar was hosted by the Executive Curator of the Shanghai Art Museum, Mr Lilei, and the Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Mr Tang Hoi-chiu.
During the seminar, Mr Tang elaborated on the positioning of Hong Kong as a centre to foster and promote ink art. He introduced the characteristics and styles of the works of Hong Kong's ink artists, such as Lui Shou-kwan, Liu Guosong, Wucius Wong, Hung Hoi, Tien Chi, Leung Kui-ting, Wong Chung-yu and Koon Wai-bong. He also highlighted how their works reflect the identity of ink art in Hong Kong.
Mr Tang said, "Hong Kong ink art has developed from profound Chinese tradition and maintained its progressive transformation.
"The 'Ink Art vs Ink Art' exhibition reveals that art can enhance city life and promote cultural diversity in an urban environment, which echoes the theme of Shanghai Expo."
During the seminar, participants shared views on various issues, such as the positioning of ink art, the manipulation of lines in ink art, the blending of calligraphy and design with contemporary ink works and artistic representations in new forms and media.
Mr Tang said, "The seminar amplified the academic value of the exhibition and facilitated dialogue between ink painters and experts of Hong Kong and Shanghai."
The "Legacy and Creations – Ink Art vs Ink Art" exhibition runs until August 9.
