Members of the public are invited to enroll in a "Weather Observation" training course organised by the Hong Kong Observatory in August and September.
Appreciating the weather through observation is the first step in formulating an accurate weather forecast. Clouds exhibit themselves in different shapes and appearance under different weather conditions in different seasons. Just knowing about clouds would give the observer a general comprehension of the current weather.
The training course in August and September aims to meet the demands of weather enthusiasts in Hong Kong. The course, which covers basic weather observation techniques and practice such as the classification of clouds, will be conducted by three experienced meteorologists of the Observatory.
The course is particularly suitable for those who are fond of outdoor activities. A deeper understanding of the weather will enable them to respond better to it when it affects their activities. The course will also cover traditional sayings relating sky conditions to weather changes. As some of them are region-specific, the course will elucidate the limitations in applying these sayings. Participants will also learn how to make effective use of the weather data available at the Observatory's website. More importantly, they will be given an opportunity to observe the weather themselves under the guidance of Observatory staff.
The course will be held in two sessions scheduled on the mornings of August 28 and September 11, and will be conducted in Cantonese at the Hong Kong Observatory Headquarters from 9.30am to 12.30pm. The course fee is $245 per person. Those interested are invited to check out the details and download the application form (in Chinese) at: www.weather.gov.hk/education/edu03course/course/coursec_1008_uc.htm .
The public may also call 1878 200, followed by the keystrokes 7-5-2 after language selection, to obtain the application form by fax.
