Enhanced sentence for drug trafficker

     Police have successfully applied for an enhanced sentence at the Court of First Instance, resulting in a 47-year-old man, who was charged with trafficking in dangerous drugs, sentenced to 80 months¡¦ imprisonment today (July 9).

     The court heard that in January 2010, the man entered Hong Kong at the Lok Ma Chau Boundary Control Point and was later arrested for possession of about 56 grams of ¡§ice¡¨ in Tsuen Wan.  

     After investigation, the man was charged with one count of trafficking in dangerous drugs. He was convicted and 111 months was originally adopted as the starting point for sentencing. The Police applied for the imposition of an enhanced sentence based on a previous court case and the judge accepted the application. Subsequently, a further nine months was added to the starting point. The man was eventually sentenced to 80 months' imprisonment after taking into consideration a guilty plea.

     "Police will continue to proactively combat all cross-border dangerous drugs offences and seek enhanced sentencing of offenders involved in the import or export of dangerous drugs," a Police spokesman said.
