The "2010 School Sports Programme (SSP) Prize Presentation Ceremony cum Sport Captain Programme Ambassadors (SCPA) Launching Ceremony" was held at the Shek Kip Mei Park Sports Centre today (July 9). A total of 63 Sport Captain Programme Ambassadors from 30 National Sports Associations (NSAs) were appointed to assist in promotion of the voluntary work of Sport Captain Programme to schools as well as to enhance the sport development in Hong Kong.

The 63 SCPA are either former ambassadors of the School Sports Programme with outstanding performances in sport promotion; or serving or retired athletes having remarkable achievements in international sport events.

The appointed SCPA will be arranged to their mother schools to share with students their sport experience or stage demonstration on sport activities as well as to advise their junior schoolmates on sport skills. They will also assist to appeal for support from active sports participants to join the Sport Captain Programme.

Awards were also presented to the students winning the "Easy Sport Competitions 2010" and schools achieving the "Active School Awards" today.

The Easy Sport Programme aims to attract primary students' interest in sport and to boost their confidence. The "Easy Sport Competition 2010" was well received with over 3,000 students from 146 primary schools taking part in a total of 12 sports competitions namely athletics, badminton, three-on-three basketball, cricket, dragon dance, fencing, handball, mini-tennis, mini-squash, soft volleyball, table tennis, and TRY Rugby. About 1,200 participants were awarded.

The Active School Awards are presented to schools which have 25 per cent or more of their students achieving the sportACT Award. This is to commend their effort in promoting "one student, one sport". About 180,000 students from a total of 343 secondary schools, primary schools and special schools had participated in the "sportACT Award Scheme" in the 2009/10 school year. There were some 50,000 students attained the "sportACT Award" and over 150 schools winning the "Active School Award".

The "Sport Captain Programme", "Easy Sport Programme" and "sportACT Award Scheme" are the subsidiary programmes of the School Sports Programme. These programmes are subvented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and organised by NSAs.

As in previous years, the LCSD hoped that through today's activity, schools could remind their students to actively participate in the "SportACT Summer Active Challenge" during the summer vacation to sustain their regular participation in physical activities, to keep fit and to win the relevant awards.

Officiating at today's ceremony were the Convener of Student Sports Activities Co-ordinating Sub-committee, Liu Ah-chuen; the Subcommittee Vice-convener, Stella Lau; the Assistant Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Leisure Services), Miss Olivia Chan Yeuk-oi; the Assistant Director of Health (Health Promotion) of the Department of Health, Dr Regina Ching Cheuk-tuen; and the Chief Curriculum Development Officer (Physical Education) of Education Bureau, Ho Chun-ip.
