Lim Kek-han leads orchestra to play Tchaikovsky

     The China Philharmonic Orchestra (Hong Kong) will present an evening of Tchaikovsky with music director and violin soloist Lim Kek-han and guest conductor Terry Leung next month.

     The programme will consist of three of Tchaikovsky's compositions: the 1812 Overture, Op.49, Violin Concerto in D, Op. 35 and Symphony No.5 in E Minor, Op. 64.

     Lim Kek-han studied violin under renowned Russian violinist Ywan Federoff and Dutch master Frits Hinse. Lim represented Holland three times in international music forums and was the concertmaster of the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra. In 1958, he went to the then USSR as a representative of China and performed with the best-known orchestras there. In 1963, Lim was made the conductor and music director of the Central Radio Symphony Orchestra. Lim has resided in Hong Kong since 1971 and is well known as a local conductor and violinist.

     Terry Leung began learning violin at the age of six under Luis B. Garcia and Lim Kek-han, and was awarded the LRSM Performers' Diploma and the FTCL Fellowship Diploma. He graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 1992 and received a scholarship in 1993 to further his studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music in the United States under renowned violinists Tiberius Kausner and Paul Hatton.  In recent years, Leung has been the concertmaster of the China Philharmonic Orchestra (Hong Kong). He has also appeared as guest conductor and soloist, performing violin concertos by Vivaldi and Mendelssohn with the orchestra.

     Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the concert by the China Philharmonic Orchestra (Hong Kong) will be staged at 8pm on August 7 (Saturday), at the Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall. Tickets priced at $80, $110 and $140 are now available at URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions will be granted to senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients.
