Two employers ordered to pay MPF arrears

The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:

     The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (June 25) obtained an order for payment of outstanding Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) contributions at about $88,000 against an employer in the District Court. Meanwhile, the MPFA pursued a claim in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $43,000 on behalf of an employee, who was owed MPF contributions by his employer.

     The District Court today issued judgment against an employer, Lucky Dragon Boat Restaurant Limited. The defendant was ordered to pay the MPFA the sum of $88,520.33, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable to 38 employees of the defendant.

     Meanwhile, at the Tribunal's hearing today, the defendant Yip Yan Transportation Limited, did not dispute the amount claimed. The Adjudicator ordered it to pay the MPFA the sum of $43,687.86, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.

     The amounts awarded at the District Court and the Tribunal will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The District Court ordered the defendant to pay costs of $930. The Tribunal ordered the defendant to pay $467 as the cost of the claim.
