Employer ordered to pay MPF arrears

The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:

     The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (June 21) pursued a claim in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $9,000 on behalf of eight employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employer.

     At the Tribunal's hearing today, the defendant Multipipe Renovation Limited, did not appear. In its absence, the Adjudicator ordered it to pay the MPFA the sum of $9,386.86, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.

     The amount awarded will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as it is received by the MPFA. The Tribunal further ordered the defendant to pay $131 as the costs of the claim.

     Multipipe Renovation Limited pleaded guilty at Kwun Tong Magistracy earlier to a count of failing to enrol its employee in an MPF scheme as required by the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Ordinance and was fined $3,000.
