Registered electors surge to record high
****************************************

A record high of more than 3.43 million registered electors are listed in the 2010 provisional register of electors for geographical constituencies, a spokesman for the Registration and Electoral Office (REO) said today (June 14).

There are about 85,000 newly registered electors for geographical constituencies. With the deletions of electors who had passed away or had not reported their latest residential addresses to the REO, there is a net increase of about 58,000 electors over 2009.

The number of electors in the provisional register for functional constituencies is about 226,000, which is roughly the same as last year.

Statistical information about these provisional registers can be viewed tomorrow (June 15) at the voter registration website at www.voterregistration.gov.hk.

"The geographical constituencies provisional register and omissions list, together with those for functional constituencies and Election Committee subsectors, will be released tomorrow for public inspection until June 29," the spokesman said.

"The respective provisional registers include all validated applications for registration as electors and applications for changes of particulars that have been received by the REO.

"The omissions lists contain the names of persons who are no longer eligible for registration, which will be removed from the respective registers," he said.

Anyone who has applied to register but does not find his name in the relevant register, or whose name is included in an omissions list, or who finds that his entries are incorrectly recorded, may lodge a notice of claim in person with the REO by June 29.

Anyone who considers that a person is not eligible to be registered may lodge a notice of objection in person with the REO also by June 29.

Specific forms for claims and objections are available from the REO or can be downloaded from its website (www.reo.gov.hk/en/voter/application.htm).

The spokesman also reminded those on the provisional registers to report any change in addresses and other registration particulars to the REO by June 29.

"Failure to do so may affect their eligibility to vote in future Legislative Council and District Council elections," he said.

Full copies of the geographical constituencies provisional register will be available for public inspection during ordinary business hours from Monday to Friday at the REO at 10/F Harbour Centre, 25 Harbour Road, Wan Chai. The relevant section of the register pertinent to a particular district will be available at the respective District Office.

For the geographical constituencies omissions list, full copies will be available for public inspection at the REO's Harbour Centre office and the various District Offices.

For functional constituencies and Election Committee subsectors, full copies of the provisional registers and omissions lists can be inspected at the REO's Harbour Centre office and its office at 10/F Guardian House, 32 Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai. Copies are also placed at the District Offices in Central, Mong Kok, Kwun Tong, Sha Tin and Tsuen Wan.

Members of the public can call the REO hotline, 2891 1001, to check whether their names are listed in the provisional registers or the omissions lists.

The REO will publish the final registers of electors on or before July 25.
