For the first time, talented youngsters from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) School of Dance and the Shanghai Theatre Academy College of Dance will jointly present a dance programme for Expo 2010 Shanghai China (Shanghai Expo).
In "Crossing Borders" on June 10 in Shanghai, students from both schools will perform five dance works.
They include "Once in a Secret Night" by renowned local choreographer Yu Pik-yim and "Ambuscade", a work by the HKAPA Head of Chinese Dance Sheng Peiqi in collaboration with Hong Kong choreographer Mui Cheuk-yin.
The programme will also feature the finale from "Free Radicals" created by leading Australian choreographer Graeme Murphy, and "The Secret Bob" by guest artist Ana Catalina Roman.
Zhao Ming, a leading Mainland choreographer and a dance graduate of the HKAPA, has created a new piece, "Place", which brings together talent from the HKAPA's three dance streams ĄV ballet, Chinese dance and contemporary dance. Zhao had previously stunned audiences with his "Acrobatic Swan Lake".
Dr Anita Donaldson, Dean of Dance at the HKAPA, said: "'Crossing Borders' is really a metaphor for several aspects of this project: the collaboration between the young people of our two schools, the cultural exchange of our two cities, as well as the integration of ballet, Chinese dance and contemporary dance."
The HKAPA's second Shanghai Expo performance is "ArtsĄDTravelĄDTwo Cities", a series of site-specific dance pieces created by students of the HKAPA to be staged on June 12 at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) in Shanghai.
Inspired by the MoCA's interior, the dancers will move in harmony with its architectural design to accentuate the special features of this cultural site.
"Site-specific events are exciting in that they are created for the particular space in which they take place," Dr Donaldson said.
"The focus is not only on the dancers and their movement, but on the location itself ĄV in this case, some of the wonderful features of the MoCA ĄV the long curved glass ramp, the outdoor deck with its silver lotus flowers, the hidden nooks and crannies.
"The title 'Two Cities' again refers to the cultural exchange and collaboration between Hong Kong and Shanghai."
