The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The Hospital Authority (HA) today (May 24) announced the commencement of an HA-wide Patient Satisfaction Survey (PSS). The HA-wide survey covering 5,000 patients will start in June in 25 public hospitals (list attached) and is due to complete before the end of 2010.

The announcement was made at a PSS seminar held today and attended by representatives of patient groups, healthcare staff of public and private hospitals and HA board and committee members. The HA in collaboration with The School of Public Health and Primary Care of the Chinese University of Hong Kong completed the verification phase of the Patient Satisfaction Survey involving over 500 patients this month.

The HA spokesperson said that the survey will enable the HA to gauge patients' needs, to formulate and implement effective treatment plans and healthcare policies, and to foster closer partnership with patients. Through a systemic approach, patients' perceptions, satisfaction, concerns and expectations in specific areas of service delivery during their hospital stay will be studied. These include accessibility and convenience; cleanliness and comfort of the physical hospital setting; food quality; mechanism for handling dissatisfaction; staff attitude and treatment co-ordination, etc. The survey results will help the HA in improving its health service quality.
