LCSD launches Green Ambassador Scheme with the support of community celebrities (with photos)
**********************************************************

To enhance public awareness in greening and strengthen community involvement in tree management work, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) launches the Green Ambassador Scheme with the support of community celebrities. Their joint efforts help recruit more green volunteers from respective districts to promote greening.

The Green Ambassador Scheme kicked off today (April 24) at the Lecture Theatre of Hong Kong Central Library, followed by a seminar on "Tree Conservation" conducted by The Conservancy Association.

The Director of Leisure and Cultural Services Mrs Betty Fung presented letters of appreciation to the 18 District Councils' representatives to thank for their participation.

The LCSD launched the Green Volunteer Scheme in 2003 to encourage members of the public to take part in community greening activities.  As from the Report of Task Force on Tree Management led by the Chief Secretary for Administration last year, it was recommended to strengthen community involvement in tree management work based on the existing Green Volunteer Scheme and mobilise more community participation in greening.

The LCSD has further expanded the Green Volunteer Scheme this year. Apart from recruiting more people to join the Scheme, it invites community celebrities to serve as Green Ambassadors to help enhance green consciousness and deliver tree care messages to members of the public, so as to encourage more public participation.

Over 170 community celebrities including District Council members have joined the Scheme to act as Green Ambassadors. They will assist in providing visual inspection to trees, reporting any irregularities, and identifying greening opportunities.

In addition to today's seminar, the LCSD will organise field trips for the Green Ambassadors to acquire the basic knowledge on tree conservation.

The Green Volunteer Scheme is well received by the public since its launch. The LCSD will provide basic horticulture training for new recruits to facilitate them in participating greening promotion activities. Those who are interested to register as a green volunteer please visit the LCSD website: http://www.lcsd.gov.hk/green/en/greenvolunteer.php .
