Voter registration for 2010 launched

The 2010 Voter Registration campaign was launched today (April 19). Eligible persons who have yet to register as electors are reminded to sign up before the registration deadline on May 17.

"Hong Kong permanent residents holding an identity document who have reached the age of 18 years and are ordinarily residing in Hong Kong are eligible to be registered as electors," a spokesman for the Registration and Electoral Office (REO) said today.

According to the electoral law, newly registered electors can vote in future Legislative Council and District Council elections only after the publication of the final registers of electors in July. They cannot vote in the Legislative Council by-election in May this year.

"Registered electors are not required to register again, but they are reminded to report any change in address or other registration particulars to the REO by June 29.

"Electors are encouraged to provide or update their email addresses, which will be provided to the candidates concerned for sending election advertisements," the spokesman said.

Forms for voter registration and report of change in registration particulars can be obtained from the REO, the Public Enquiry Service Centres of the District Offices and management offices of public housing estates. They can also be downloaded from the voter registration website (

Completed forms can be submitted by mail to the REO at 10/F, Guardian House, 32 Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai, or by fax to 2891 1180.

The REO will publicise the voter registration campaign via TV Announcements in the Public Interest (APIs), radio APIs, newspaper advertisements and posters. The public can also visit the voter registration website for information.

Enquiries on voter registration can be made to the REO hotline on 2891 1001.
