Update on cluster of parainfluenza virus cases in mixed rehabilitation ward at Castle Peak Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding a mixed rehabilitation ward at Castle Peak Hospital (CPH) in which some patients had tested positive for parainfluenza virus (PIV) type 3, the hospital spokesperson announced the following update today (April 14):

     One more male patient and one staff member in the ward have presented with respiratory symptoms. Appropriate tests were arranged for the 68-year-old patient and the results are pending. The patient is being treated under isolation and is in stable condition. The staff member is on sick leave.

     Admission to the ward has been suspended. Restricted visits to and discharge from the ward have been imposed. Infection control measures of the ward concerned have been stepped up. All other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.
