As it celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2010, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum continues to embrace the vision that cultural heritage is interactive and for all, and it now takes another step in its mission to cater to a diverse community that encompasses different needs and backgrounds. To carry forward its mission of extending its audience and services as it begins its second decade, the museum invites local ethnic communities to join the celebration party.
Events crossing language and cultural boundaries have been organised for local Chinese and different ethnic groups in Hong Kong. The programmes include "Ethnictricity", the first ever stand-up "dramedy", and a Fun Cultures Bazaar to be held on May 16, which is "International Museum Day 2010, Hong Kong". Admission is free.
The museum's Chief Curator, Ms Belinda Wong Sau-lan, said the museum saw these events as a platform to introduce the history, culture and art of Hong Kong to ethnic communities in order to stimulate their interest in local culture and enhance their understanding of the Chinese community.
"In return, we want to use the museum as a bridge to bring the Chinese community closer to diverse ethnic groups so as to promote social harmony by inviting the public to better understand the traditional cultures of different ethnicities on a festive and joyous occasion," Ms Wong said.
The details of the programmes are as follows:
1. Ethnictricity: A multi-ethnic, multicultural "dramedy"
Content: An extraordinary couple decides to tie the knot, resulting in a series of conflicts, misunderstandings and integration between different cultures. Featuring a multi-ethnic cast, the drama uses stand-up comedy as the lingua franca to transcend ethnic and cultural boundaries, inviting the audience to immerse themselves in laughter and experience the integration of different cultures.
Date : May 16 (Sunday)
Time : 2.30pm – 3.30pm
Venue : Theatre, Hong Kong Heritage Museum
Enrolment : Advance registration on or before April 21 is required by filling in an application form, which can be downloaded from the Heritage Museum's website. Interested parties can call 2180 8260 for enquiries. Distribution of tickets will be decided by drawing lots and is limited to two tickets per application. All applicants will be notified individually, and successful applicants have to collect the tickets from the museum.
2. Fun Cultures Bazaar: A feast of ethnic colours
Content: The museum's courtyard provides the setting for a multicultural carnival and bazaar that showcases the traditional arts and culture of different ethnic groups, who are invited to gather for a multicultural feast. The activities include Sichuan Bian Lian (changing faces), Bollywood dance, Western magic show, Filipino traditional music, Korean folk dance, game booths and booths for tasting ethnic delicacies, and "Happy Snaps: We are One Big Family".

Enrolment : All are welcome.
The Heritage Museum will also organise guided tours, in Cantonese and English, to the Cantonese Opera Heritage Hall, New Territories Heritage Hall and T.T. Tsui Gallery of Chinese Art on May 16. Advance booking is not required. The guided tours are limited to 20 participants per session on a first-come-first-served basis.

The Heritage Museum is located at 1 Man Lam Road, Sha Tin. Car parking is available at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. Those who prefer to use public transport may take the MTR to Che Kung Temple station, which is within three minutes' walk of the museum.
