Chinese Opera Festival 2010 to be staged from June to July (with photos)

     Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), Chinese Opera Festival 2010 will be staged from June 4 to July 21 featuring numerous theatrical genres from different parts of China.

     Today (April 13) at the press conference held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Chief Manager (Cultural Presentations) of the LCSD, Ms Mandy Tong, and Senior Manager (Theatre and Chinese Opera) of the LCSD, Ms Teresa Lee, introduced in detail the programmes of the coming festival. Also present to talk about the legacy of different theatrical genres were Chi Xiaoqiu from the Peking Opera Theatre of Beijing, Tang Yuen-ha from Jingkun Theatre and Leung Hon-wai from the Hon Fung Cantonese Opera Institute.

     To promote Chinese traditional theatre in the community and to enable the public to gain more insights into Chinese culture, the LCSD will organise the Chinese Opera Festival as a regular annual event. This is expected to make Hong Kong the bridge and the window for the rest of the world to understand the many facets of Chinese opera.

     Chinese Opera Festival 2010 will showcase Chinese opera assets from all over China, including "The Legacy of Cheng Yanqiu" by the Peking Opera Theatre of Beijing; Guangdong Chiu Chow Opera Theatre Number Two Troupe and Hong Kong Sun Hon Kwong Chiu Chow Opera Troupe; "A Virtuosic Showcase of Yue Opera Classics" by Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe of Shaoxing; Showcase of Outstanding Young Performers in Kunqu Opera; Sichuan Opera Theatre of Chengdu; Puxian Opera by the Lisheng Opera Troupe of Fujian; Zhengzi Opera Troupe of Lufeng City, Guangdong; "Poignant Tunes" by the Cantonese Music and Song Art Troupe; a new Cantonese Opera "Eternal Lament at the Palace of Eternal Life" by Hong Fung Cantonese Opera Institute, as well as "Three Stars in Peking Opera" by Jingkun Theatre and Peking Opera Theatre of Hebei. Moreover, there will be free activities such as talks, seminars, exhibitions and foyer performances.
