The second international conference on "Hong Kong in the Asia-Pacific Region", jointly organised by the Central Policy Unit (CPU) and the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (incorporating the Centre of Asian Studies) was held today (March 10) at the University of Hong Kong.
In his opening remarks delivered to the conference, the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Henry Tang, said Hong Kong had Mainland China and the ASEAN countries as its economic hinterlands, and it should capitalise on its strategic position as the bridge that connected these regions socially, culturally and economically.
Chairman of the East Asian Institute at the National University of Singapore, and former vice chancellor of the University of Hong Kong Professor Wang Gungwu gave an overview keynote speech entitled "Adapting to Growing Proximity".
Eminent scholars and experts from the region discussed educational co-operation, mobility of talents, and social and cultural exchange in the region, and examined the opportunities and challenges presented to the region in general and to Hong Kong in particular.
About 100 participants comprising academics, think-tank representatives, business leaders, consular representatives attended the conference.
