Professor Charles K Kao and Mrs May Wan Kao attended a prize-giving ceremony for the "Stamp Sheetlet Design Competition in Honour of Prof Charles Kao Being Awarded the Nobel Prize", held at the Hong Kong Science Museum today (March 2).
The competition was held by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department last November to commemorate Professor Kao being awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for his groundbreaking achievements in optical fibre communications.
Other officiating guests at today's ceremony included the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, the Postmaster General, Mr Clement Cheung, the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Mrs Betty Fung, and the representative of the adjudication panel, Dr Kan Tai-keung.
Divided into two categories, Open and Student, the competition received 389 entries, comprising 141 entries from the Open Division, 128 from the Secondary School Division and 120 from the Primary School Division. The adjudication panel of seven professionals selected 33 winning entries.

The major winners received cash prizes of $5,000, with second place receiving $3,000 and third place $1,000. Winners of the merit prize in each division received $500. Certificates were also presented to the award winners.
The design by Ng Shuk Mei, the secondary school division champion, was selected by Hongkong Post for production of the definitive stamp sheetlet to be issued this year.
