The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (February 22) the February 2010 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).
In this issue, two feature articles entitled "New Development in Electronic Declaration Service" and "Usage of Personal Computers and Internet Services by Hong Kong Residents, 2000 to 2009" are included.
"New Development in Electronic Declaration Service"
Road Cargo System (ROCARS) is an information technology system newly developed by the Customs and Excise Department for the customs clearance of road cargo. Under ROCARS, new functions of Data Inheritance (DI) are introduced. DI refers to the re-use of common data items in ROCARS for the preparation of trade declaration (TDEC) using the new Internet-based end-user software. It can save users' effort and time of inputting the common data items again for TDEC submission, and also enhance data accuracy.
C&SD has been actively involved in preparing system requirements and testing of features in relation to DI. This feature article briefly describes new developments in the Electronic Declaration Service to cope with the launch of ROCARS and presents the salient features of DI.

"Usage of Personal Computers and Internet Services by Hong Kong Residents, 2000 to 2009"
Given the rapid development of the information technology (IT) in Hong Kong in past decade, C&SD has been conducting the Thematic Household Survey on IT usage and penetration regularly since 2000 to gain better understanding of the latest development of IT in the community. This feature article describes the usage of personal computers and Internet services by the Hong Kong residents from 2000 to 2009.

Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing 140 tables. It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong. Topics include population and vital events; labour; external trade; industrial production; land, housing, building and construction; transport, communications and tourism; public accounts, money and finance; prices; commerce; social conditions; energy; and national income and Balance of Payments. For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available.
