As at 11am today (February 5), 34 families comprising 80 people affected by the collapse of a building in Ma Tau Wai Road have moved into the Housing Department's transit centre in Shek Lei Estate, Kwai Chung.
A spokesman for the Housing Department said that screening process of those eligible for public housing was in hand as a matter of top priority.
After the tragedy, the Housing Department took part in joint departmental efforts to provide assistance to the victims. The Shek Lei transit centre was quickly made available to them to solve their imminent housing needs. Housing staff also went to the Holy Carpenter Church Community Centre and Shek Lei transit centre to explain application procedures for long-term rehousing.
As at 11am this morning, 17 cases eligible for rehousing have been referred to the Housing Department by the Lands Department and the Social Welfare Department for follow up action.
The spokesman said that offer of public housing to eligible applicants could be made as early as today.
Later today, five families with 11 people are expected to move into Shek Lei. The spokesman urged those who are still staying in Holy Carpenter Church Community Centre to move to Shek Lei transit centre where they can wait for the outcome of their eligibility test for entitlement to public housing.
