Survey of Innovation Activities for 2009 starts
***********************************************

The Census and Statistics Department announced today (February 5) the commencement of the Survey of Innovation Activities for 2009.  The survey aims to collect information on innovation activities in the business sector.  The survey results are useful to both the Government and private sector in formulating policies and making decisions.

The survey is conducted under Part III of the Census and Statistics Ordinance (Chapter 316), which requires the responsible persons of the establishments selected for the survey to complete the questionnaire or cause it to be completed by an authorised person to the best of his/her knowledge and belief.  It was notified as a mandatory statistical survey in Legal Notice 183 of 2002 in the Government of the HKSAR Gazette of November 29, 2002.  In accordance with the provisions of the Ordinance, all collected information which may enable identification of individual establishments will be kept in strict confidence.  Only aggregate information, which does not reveal details of individual establishments, will be released.

About 5 800 establishments in various economic sectors are selected to participate in the survey.  Questionnaires have been sent individually to the selected establishments together with the notification letters.  To facilitate the establishments in providing the required information, electronic template of the questionnaire will also be available for use upon request.

The Commissioner for Census and Statistics, Mr Fung Hing-wang, appeals to the management of all selected establishments to fulfill their legal and civic responsibilities by returning the completed questionnaires to the Department by March 19, 2010.

If necessary, census officers of the Department may phone or visit individual establishments to offer assistance in completing the questionnaire.  These officers will each carry an Enumerator Identity Card and a certificate for conducting the survey, which are available for inspection.

Enquiries regarding the survey may be directed to the Science and Technology Statistics Section of the Department at telephone number 3422 3258.
