David Gwilt to conduct January concert
**************************************

Professor David Gwilt, the eminent musician in local classical music, will conduct the China Philharmonic Orchestra (Hong Kong) to play four masterpieces in concert with music director and violin soloist Lim Kek-han on January 30 (Saturday).

The concert will be staged at 8pm at the Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall. The orchestra will perform Verdi's "Overture: La Forza del Destino", Bruch's "Violin Concerto No 1 in G Minor, Op.26", Glazunov's "Concert Waltz No 1 in D, Op.47" and Tchaikovsky's "Suite No 3 in G, Op.55".

Professor Gwilt was born in Scotland and has become a key figure in Hong Kong's classical music world. He excels in composing, conducting, writing music criticism, presenting radio programmes and teaching. Prof Gwilt studied music at the University of Cambridge and later worked as a professional pianist and viola player in the United Kingdom apart from his teaching, composing and conducting commitments. He came to Hong Kong in 1970 and was awarded an MBE for services to music and the arts in Hong Kong in 1992. He was a Fellowship of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 1996, and two years later he was titled the Emeritus Professor of Music by the Chinese University of Hong Kong where he has taught for 25 years.

China Philharmonic Orchestra (Hong Kong), formerly named the Lim Kek-han Philharmonic Orchestra, has frequently held concerts and collaborated with renowned soloists and guest conductors from the Mainland and overseas to bring different kinds of music to audiences. The orchestra works hard to introduce Chinese music rearranged in modern style, including the "Yellow River Cantata" concert and an outdoor concert performed with a 300-member choir in the Festival of Asian Arts in 1982.
