Pianist Cheng Wai to give recital in January

     One of the award-winners of this year's "Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award", pianist Cheng Wai, will give a recital next month (January).

     Featuring Bach's "Prelude and Fugue in D", Mozart's "Sonata No 18 in D", Rachmaninov's "Four Etudes-tableaux", Tan Dun's "Eight Memories in Watercolor" and Chopin's "Sonata No 3 in B minor", the recital will be held at 8pm, Wednesday, January 27, at the Theatre, Hong Kong City Hall.

     Cheng Wai is among the first cohort graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and obtained a bachelor degree from the Curtis Institute of Music, in America. She later obtained her master from the Yale University and the doctorate from the New York State University. Her principal teachers include Ling Yuan, Gabriel Kwok, John Winther, Seymour Lipkin, Claude Frank and Gilbert Kalish.

     Cheng Wai has won numerous prizes and performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, New York Stony Brook Philharmonic, Denmark Odense Symphony, Yale Philharmonic, Sichuan Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. She is now the Chairlady of the Central Conservatory of Music (HK) Foundation and currently teaching at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and has also adjudicated in numerous local and international competitions.

     "Piano Recital by Cheng Wai" is one of the programmes of "Our Music Talents" series presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets priced at $100 and $150 are now available at URBTIX outlets. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients may have 50% off (limited quotas for students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis).
