Five local experimental musicians will perform their own compositions in a contemporary audio-visual project next month. They will also pay tribute to Brian Eno, the American experimentalist and godfather of electronic music, by rearranging his ambient work "Music for Airports" into a new electro-acoustic version.
The programme will reconstruct the real and the imagined old Kai Tak Airport in an audio-visual portrait of a disappearing city with riveting electronic symphonies and live video projections.
Contemporary Musiking arranged for performances by the musicians Gaybird, Aenon Loo, Tang Lok Yin, Steve Hui (Nerve) and Choi Sai Ho (S.T.). They will perform "The grid of elasticity II", "Towards the Air", "Clarinet Duet", "Aeolian FX - Airport" and "Ten" respectively, and they will play "Music for Airports" rearranged by Nerve as a group.
With the live accompaniment of a sample-infused electro-acoustic soundscape by Hong Kong New Music Ensemble and video projections by Adrian Yeung and Silas Fong, audiences will extend their horizons beyond cruising altitude through experimental music.
Founded in 2007, Contemporary Musiking is a Hong Kong-based arts organisation. It is solely devoted to the promotion and creation of contemporary and experimental music. The group has impressed audiences with its daring programming and highly experimental productions that merge contemporary music with technology and new media. Through its strategic partnership with arts organisations across genres, it regularly invites overseas musicians to collaborate with local composers and provides a cross-disciplinary, multi-media platform for composers to experiment, explore and expand.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department "Brian Eno's Music for Airports: New Audio-Visual Counterpoint" will be staged at 8pm on January 29 and 30 (Friday and Saturday); and 3pm on January 30 at Black Box Theatre, Kwai Tsing Theatre. Tickets priced at $170 are now available at URBTIX outlets. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
