Fatal case of human swine influenza in United Christian Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of United Christian Hospital (UCH) today (December 17) made the following announcement regarding the death of a human swine influenza (HSI) patient:

     A 36-year-old female patient was found collapse in a shopping arcade on December 15 .  She was sent to the Accident and Emergency Department of UCH by ambulance, her condition was critical and required resuscitation in the ambulance.  She had fever, chest X-ray showed severe pneumonia.  She was admitted to Medical and Geriatric ward for further treatment and on ventilation support.  The patient's condition continued to deteriorate and was certified dead at 4.12am on December 16.  Positive result of HSI was confirmed today (December 17).  The case has been referred to the coroner for necessary follow up. The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

     The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.
