HA announces a fatal case and a critical case of human swine influenza

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hospital Authority today (December 8) announced a fatal case and a new critical case of human swine influenza:

     A 56-year-old female patient with good past health developed flu symptoms on November 29 and attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Kwong Wah Hospital on December 3. The patient was in critical condition and admitted to the intensive care unit for clinical treatment. Positive result for HSI was confirmed on the same day (December 3) and she was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. The patient remained in critical condition and succumbed at noon today (December 8). The hospital has expressed its condolences to the deceased's family. The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.

     A 49-year-old man, a chronic smoker with hypertension, developed flu symptoms on November 29 and attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Elizabeth Hospital on December 7. He was admitted to the isolation ward and was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. On the same day, positive result for HSI was confirmed and he was transferred to the intensive care unit due to a deterioration in his condition. He is now in critical condition. The hospital will closely monitor his condition.
