Two critical cases of human swine influenza at Prince of Wales Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     A spokesperson of the Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH) today (November 30) made the following announcement regarding two newly confirmed critical human swine influenza (HSI) cases.

     The first case, a 52-year-old man with diabetes and hypertension, attended the Accident and Emergency Department on November 25 due to fever. He was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit and positive result of HSI was confirmed on the same day. He was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. His condition is now critical and he requires ventilation support.

     The other patient is a 95-year-old man with hypertension and heart disease. He attended the Accident and Emergency Department on Saturday (November 28) due to fever and shortness of breath. He was admitted into the medical ward and positive result of HSI was confirmed on the following day. He was prescribed with antibiotics. He is in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

     The hospital will continue to closely monitor the condition of the two patients.
