The development of renewable energy technology encompassed challenges as well as boundless opportunities, Deputy Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Mr Andrew Lai said today (November 21).
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the "2009 Hong Kong Technology and Renewable Energy Events", Mr Lai said renewable energy, such as solar energy, wind power and hydro power, was inexhaustible, and its use could greatly reduce pollution.
He said the Government would spare no effort to promote the development of innovation and technology, one of the six industries where Hong Kong enjoyed clear advantages, through funding support, support facilities and incubation programmes, and enhance public understanding and interest in the subject through various activities.
Noting the need for more talent for research into and development of innovation and technology in Hong Kong, he encouraged youngsters to have confidence in themselves.
He cited the example of a local Form 7 student who had won the First Class Award of the "National Little Scientist of Tomorrow" Reward Scheme organised by the Ministry of Education and China Association of Science and Technology, which was generally known as the "Nobel Prize for Youth".
"2009 Hong Kong Technology and Renewable Energy Events" requires students to make use of their knowledge to design, produce and test applications of renewable energy. More importantly, it provides a platform for exchange and learning through workshops, seminars and website discussions with a view to enhancing their interest and ability in applying technology.
Mr Lai said, "It is apt that the competition is held in the Science Park. Apart from its superb venue and pleasing scenery, the Science Park is the most important base for high-end technology in Hong Kong. It has identified "green technology" as its fifth focus cluster and is now home to the Global Thin Film Photovoltaic R&D centre of Du Pont Apollo Limited.
In its fourth year, the event is themed "A Key to Our Future" and aims to raise awareness of renewable energy concepts among young scientists of the next generation.
The competition events included a solar model car race and solar-hydrogen powered hybrid model hovercraft/boat race; a remote-control renewable energy-hydrogen powered hybrid model boat race; a Sterling engine race as well as video capture and website design. The competitions have a record total of 477 teams and more than 1,500 participants, reflecting the increasing awareness of renewable energy.
