Results of the 2008 Annual Survey of Transport and Related Services

     According to the results of the 2008 Annual Survey of Transport and Related Services released today (November 20) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), total receipts (including business receipts and other income) of the transport sector amounted to $544.8 billion in 2008, representing an increase of 4.7% over 2007.     

     The value added of the transport sector, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, amounted to $91.5 billion in 2008, representing a decrease of 18.9% compared with 2007.

     The gross surplus of the transport sector, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses and compensation of employees, decreased significantly by 41.6% compared with a year earlier to $33.7 billion in 2008.  The gross surplus accounted for 6.2% of total receipts in 2008.

     Within the transport sector, the four largest major industry groups in terms of value added in 2008 were (1) land passenger transport, (2) services incidental to transport, (3) air transport, and (4) ocean and coastal water transport.  They together accounted for 84.7% of the total value added of the whole sector.

     In the land passenger transport industry, total receipts amounted to $35.7 billion in 2008.  Value added decreased by 2.5% compared with 2007 to $21.4 billion.  Gross surplus was $9.3 billion and accounted for 26.0% of total receipts in 2008.

     In the services incidental to transport industry, total receipts amounted to $236.3 billion in 2008.  Value added increased by 1.6% from 2007 to $21.2 billion.  Gross surplus was $8.4 billion and accounted for 3.6% of total receipts in 2008.

     In the air transport industry, total receipts amounted to $112.2 billion in 2008.  Value added decreased significantly by 46.9% compared with 2007 to $17.6 billion.  Gross surplus was -$0.7 billion.

     In the ocean and coastal water transport industry, total receipts amounted to $128.3 billion in 2008.  Value added decreased markedly by 23.1% from 2007 to $17.3 billion.  Gross surplus was $11.0 billion and accounted for 8.6% of total receipts in 2008.

     The principal statistics for the transport sector, with breakdowns by major industry group in transport and related services, are shown in the attached table.
