*********************************************************
Professor Charles Kao's groundbreaking achievement in fibre optics communication benefited the whole world tremendously and he was awarded the 2009 Nobel prize in physics.
To commemorate Prof Kao's achievement, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has organised a stamp sheetlet design competition. Those who want to salute Prof Kao in a creative way should not miss the opportunity to join the competition.
The "Stamp Sheetlet Design Competition in Honour of Prof Charles Kao's Being Awarded the Nobel Prize" is now open to Hong Kong residents. Those interested should submit entries to the Hong Kong Science Museum from 10am on Monday (November 16) to 5pm on December 4.
The theme of the entries for this competition should relate to Prof Kao being awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize with the design in stamp sheetlet format. The winning entries will be considered by Hongkong Post for the production of a definitive stamp sheetlet to be issued in 2010.
The competition is divided into two categories - Open and Student. The Student Division is sub-divided into Secondary School Division (F1 to F7 students) and Primary School Division (P1 to P6 students). Participants in the Student Division should choose the sub-division in which they will take part according to the class that they will be attending by the deadline for entries. Students may choose to participate in either the Student Division or the Open Division but not both. Entrants in all divisions are on an individual basis and each entrant may submit only one design.
The winners will receive cash prizes of $5,000, with second place receiving $3,000 and third place $1,000. Winners of the merit prize in each division will receive $500. Certificates will also be presented to the award winners.
For details of the competition, please refer to the Science Museumˇ¦s website: http://hk.science.museum. Entry forms can also be downloaded from the website.
The results will be announced on the Science Museum's website by mid-December while winners will each receive a written notice. For details of the competition, please call the Science Museum at 2732 3220.
The LCSD and the Chinese University of Hong Kong will jointly present an exhibition entitled "A Tribute to Prof Charles Kao - Father of Fibre Optics", and two special lectures next month. The exhibition will be held at the Science Museum from December 8 to March 10, 2010. The lectures "Professor Charles Kao: Pioneer, Scientist, Innovator and Entrepreneur" by Prof Cheung Kwok-wai from the Department of Information Engineering of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and "Optical Fibre Communication: Charm and Challenges" by Prof Shu Ching-tat from the Department of Electronic Engineering of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, will be held on December 12 and December 20 respectively at the museum's Lecture Hall. Conducted in Cantonese, the lectures will be free of charge and on a first come, first served basis. For more details, please call 2732 3232.
